The USC Trojans, and everybody else, know how to stop the depleted Arizona Wildcats — take Jerryd Bayless and Chase Budinger out of the game.
The Trojans made the strategy work in a hostile environment Thursday night to beat the Wildcats 70-58.
O.J. Mayo scored 20 points and USC withstood an Arizona comeback to hand the Wildcats their fifth home loss of the season.
In a matchup of two of the game's best freshmen, O.J. Mayo got the better of Bayless, who matched his season low of eight points, 13 below his season average, and committed six turnovers. The Wildcats' other top scorer, Budinger, scored only seven points, 10 below his average.
Davon Jefferson had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Trojans (18-9, 9-6).
The loss was a setback in the Wildcats' (17-11, 7-8) bid for their 24th consecutive NCAA tournament berth, the longest active streak in the nation.
Jordan Hill led Arizona with 18 points. Jawann McClellan added 14.
